HOW TO BECOME A COPE MEMBER?
What's happening now?
COPE Local 468 currently has an organizing campaign underway to unionize all the non-union clerical and secretarial administrative staff employed with LHSC at the Victoria and University Campuses.
You and your co-workers are currently being asked to sign cards with COPE Local 468. Once a sizeable majority has signed cards, then an application for certification will be made to the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB).
During this time, the Organizing team will be holding information sessions, town hall calls, and private departmental group meetings for you and your co- workers. This is an opportunity for you to find out more about: COPE Local 468, the work we are currently doing for our members, what advantages there would be for becoming a member, improvements in your working conditions and most importantly, give you the necessary information to determine for yourselves the benefits of becoming part of COPE Local 468.
We encourage everyone to get as much information and facts as possible to be able to make an informed vote!
The vote...
A vote will take place at the workplace, usually within one week after the union submits the application. The Labour Relations Board will conduct a secret ballot vote. All employees are eligible to vote. It doesn't matter if you are part-time, casual or full-time - all votes count the same. You must vote in person on the day of the vote. When a majority vote for the union, the Labour Board will certify COPE Local 468 as your legal bargaining agent and representative.
From that point on, your employer must deal with your union on all your working conditions. If you have any issues at work, COPE Local 468 will represent you and provide you with any resources you need.
LHSC and COPE representatives (including workers from your work site) will then begin to negotiate a collective agreement. This agreement - the union contract - sets out the wages, benefits, working conditions, job security and other rights you have as a worker at LHSC.
COPE Local 468 currently represents the workers at LHSC Victoria Campus and Thames Valley Children’s centre. Members from these bargaining units hold positions on the COPE Local 468 Executive Board. When the LHSC University Campus becomes part of COPE Local 468, you and your co-workers will have the opportunity to elect representatives to be members of the Local 468 Executive Board or run for other positions and committees.
You are the last group of employees at LHSC who are not represented by a union! This is why COPE Local 468 is the right union for you.
